1/48th scale model kits are not as popular as 1/35 scale model kits. However, after trying this kit, I am sold.Tamiya released 1/48th kits with die-cast chassis. Some may say heavier chassis may increase the chance of damage if you drop the assembled kit on your carpet.I, on the other hand, like the heavy feel to the completed kit.It gave me the illusion of working on a heavy vehicle, rather than a plastic model kit. After all, that's why some automobile toys are made out of die-cast material. This kit has close to 150 parts. Needless to say, it's not a toy for toddlers. It has link and piece tracks that fit well around running gears, with sagging track details.Running gears take 2 sheets of sprues, superstructure and gun takes the other 2 sprues.Die-cast lower hull is in a blister pack stapled to one corner of the box, so it won'tcrush other parts in shipping.Without counting rivets, this is an excellent representation of StuG III B.Interior is bare, but bare interior is not unusual even for 1/35 scale kits.(Tamiya's bigger 1/35 StuG III B, however, has rudimentary interior with gun breech)Hatches can be opened or closed.Gun can be elevated and swiveled.Driver's visor can be closed or kept open. Some tools are molted on the fenders but they don't look too bad.The two problems I found were about 1/16 inch shorter looking gun barrel, and lack of intake grills.Fortunately there are after-maker barrels that can be purchased at 5-7 dollars a piece. Some after-market barrels exactly same length as the kit barrel, which would be useless. But Armorscale and RB barrels are longer and they fit perfectly.A builder can use some putty to extend the gun just a tad.(I found it difficult because of tapered end, and I just got after-market berrels)The other problem is that there are no engine deck grills supplied with the kit.But Tamiya left intakes open, without blocking them with plastic covers with raised grill detail. This means one could get an after-market etched grill set available separately from companies like Voyager. If those minor updates are done, this kit would turn out to be as accurate as 1/35 scale kit.Tamiya seems to dislike overly complicated construction methods.Fast builders should be able to build it within 3-5 hours.Meticulous builders would take up to 8 hours in assembly.Considering Dragon's 1/35 releases tend to take 2-3 times that time, this kit should be a breeze for an experienced builder.I would recommend this kit to a builder who may want to try his/her hand in slightly smaller scale.I thought I would never veer away from 1/35 scale. But this kit proved that I didn't have to stay with 1/35 scale to get the substantially similar level of detail.
