I bought a couple of these and am happy with them. This is for the benefit of a cat that's getting on in years and has lost some of the spring in her step. A cat isn't happy when stuck on the ground. My cat discovered the stairs quickly, and she's perfectly happy to amble up them. Note that they're available in various widths and heights and colors. I wanted the narrowest width (which is plenty wide for a cat) and the tallest height. There are other brands and styles to be found if you look around that may match your décor or environment better, but these are your basic, functional steps. If you like these, you also might check out an eBay seller named "catcribs", who offers similar stairs and ramps. In addition to using stairs, I set up a little home-made ramp behind a desk. I went to the local hardware store and bought a wooden plank, 6 inches wide and 6 feet long, and also a narrow strip of cheap utility carpet. I trimmed the length of the plank and cut the carpet and nailed it to the plank, and that's the ramp. The carpet is important to give the ramp traction. I screwed an eye-bolt to the end of the ramp and clamped a small block of wood to the desktop. Then I rested the ramp against this block of wood, hooking the eye-bolt over a nail so it wouldn't fall off. The ramp was easy to do and cheap, but it requires a gentle slope, so you need a big ratio of width to height. Use stairs where your ground space is limited. One way or another, give your cat access to high places. A cat needs to rise above the ground to be happy.
