Santa gave this train to my son this year and it was a huge hit.It is a great set that can be used indoors and OUTDOORS (light rain wont hurt at all).Assembly:This set is very easy to put together for parents. Unlike many of the playmobil toys and accessories that require a lot of assembly, the train comes pretty much intact, except for a couple stickers and a couple pieces that clip on the top of the train.Tracks:Putting the tracks together is quite easy for parents and should be quite manageable for a child over 4 or 5 (with parental supervision until they get the hang of it). However, it turns out that there are not many possible configurations with the included tracks. For those who want to create more elaborate loops and switches, I would recommend getting:- 2 extra sets of the curved tracks (12 curves per pack)- 1 extra set of the straight tracks (12 per pack)- 1 or 2 cross-over tracks- 2 additional switches (1 left handed, 1 right... which is how i think they come)- 1 set of adjustment pieces- 1 end of the line Bumper StopI know that is a lot, but the list above should give you a ton of flexibility. At the very least, get the 1 set of the curved tracks, 1 set of the straight tracks, and 2 additional switches.Other Trains cars:The red playmobil train is sort of freight train oriented, and there are a a few additional cars that are freight related that you can add on. However, there is also a red passenger car, so this particular set can work both ways. The other RC train from playmobil (the white and blue one with the clear top) is really more oriented as a passenger train only, so I prefer the set being reviewed here for its flexibility.Add-ons for around the tracks:We have set up other playmobil toys along side the tracks, as well as other toys my son likes. Even if it doesn't exactly make sense to have a couple castles with knights along the tracks on one side, and modern construction equipment on the other side, I don't think most kids will really care. In fact, he uses the train cargo container as a "troop" transport when "raiding" the construction site. He has also built tunnels and bridges using blocks and furniture. (as far as I know there are NO tunnel add-ons available at this time).That being said, there are a variety of landscape add-on kits that look quite nice with the train set. Also the playmobil construction toys and shipping transport accessories work quite well. There is a crane, and fake coal to load in the cargo container.Cons:Even though I gave this 5 stars, there are some down side:- battery life for train is OK, but could be better. Rechargeable batteries are probably worth it.- no on/off switch on the train, you have to pull out the battery module- the lights are always on (eating up extra battery power)- would appreciate having more variety in the types of train cars to choose from.- no automated track switching or lightsHope this helps.

This was a family gift for my son on his 5th birthday. Each family member bought an accessory and my husband and I bought the train itself. Nearly a year later he uses it almost daily. All the components are easy to use. The track is well designed, fits together well and is very durable. The train almost never derails without a good cause - like a toy being left on the track. You really do need to buy a fair amount of extra track to make different configurations. The extra track is fairly pricey and that is probably the biggest draw back. This train is definitely an investment but the quality, durability and continued interest that my son has shown in the train made it well worth the money for us. One last thing, this train is a battery hog and well worth a set of good rechargeable batteries. Eight rechargeable AA batteries are what you need.
