In you need a frequency counter, these handheld models once sold by B&K Precision as the 1870/5, now by RSR, Reed or Lutron are all identical models with different brand names.ProsThe specification sheet is accurate. This model has been reliable, easy to use, compact, battery operated, and offer high count limits and functionality that rival many bench frequency counters costing 2-3x more in price.This model can use an antenna to detect over-the-air transmission. It can average, min, max, store and recall its counts, say to make comparisons. It counts in 2 major ranges and can accurately count down to 0.1 Hz.Batteries are at the bottom, behind the LCD, and provides weight to balance the unit out when its on its stand.ConsIts major drawback is an awkward design, it takes getting used too. it looks like an upside down DMM, and it gets disorienting. The user manual, functions, annunciators and labels on the device are not clearest, for example:CALL means re-CALL [the RECORDed value]REL is RELative [from a frequency change from RECORD value]A flashing period on the rightmost decimal place marks counts acquisitionThe OFF/ON button is easy to press and not recessed, so the unit can be turned on accidentally.The LCD has no backlightThere is no option for an external frequency reference, so accuracy is limited by the stability of its internal crystal oscillator
