Extremely fragile.

First off, let me just say that the nano was my fourth iPod; I have a second-generation 40GB iPod, as well as two minis (1st gen 4GB and 2nd gen 6GB), and was happy with all three until the batteries died. A side note--don't ever store your iPod in a third-party speaker set that also charges. Mine lasted not quite a year and now the battery dies after 20 minutes of play time.Here is the problem with the nano. It looks cool, is lightweight, and for all intents and purposes, promises to be a great piece of technology. But it is just way too easy to break. My other iPods had taken some abuse over the years, but never showed any signs of considerable wear (except for a scratched screen on the 40GB). I managed to break the Nano two days after purchase on its first use, without any significant trauma to the casing. (I dropped it while sitting on the couch, and it fell two feet.) The screen cracked and the display is ruined, at a cost of over $100 to replace. Even after giving a polite explanation, producing a receipt, and enduring condescension from the manager ("Sometimes things break"), Apple wouldn't take it back.I really can't recommend this product. There are better iPods out there, namely the Minis, which are more tightly crafted and likely to withstand the pressures of everyday use. Don't waste your money on the nano. It is flimsy and poorly constructed, and you're better off looking elsewhere until they improve their product.

A Great First iPod!

This was my first iPod, and I had wanted a mini for a long time. But unfortunately, the mini got replaced by the nano as soon as I was about to buy it. I was very unsure about the nano at first, but I've become very happy with it. But, as with any iPod, there are some downsides.Pros:-Small, so it fits basically anywhere.-Brighter screen than the mini.-One of my friends has a mini, and the volume on the nano seems to go louder than the mini.-It's able to store pictures and contacts, among others.-The screen is colored, unlike the black-and-white mini.-I've read many reviews saying it's very fragile, but I've dropped it quite a few times and it hasn't broken (yet).Cons:-The headphones plug in at the bottom, which is kinda stupid and takes some getting used to.-It's almost TOO small. It's very easy to lose.-Fingerprints show up very easily on the back chrome side, as well as the front.-It comes in limited colors.-The acessories it comes with does not include a charger that plugs into the wall, only one that plugs into the computer.-It scratches very easily.Overall, I think this is worth 4 stars. It's a good first iPod for people who have not had another different iPod, because this would probably take a while to get used to after having a different one.

This gaget is a great way to take your entire library out with you when you exercise. Most people are aware of the plusses... I thought I'd write up what I think are negatives.-- I didn't like how you have to purchase a sleeve to carry the ipod in. Most mp3 players come with this accessory. (You also have to purchase other accessories, which I think is a racket)-- Choosing which songs or playlist you listen to is difficult when you're on the move. My other players have buttons that are easy to feel and navigate once you learn where they are.--For the same reason, it's also difficult to change the volume.When running, I actually prefer my older mp3 player that doesn't hold as many songs as my ipod. I think if I had known it was so difficult to search and change the settings while running I'd have chosen a different player.

Attack of the 40-foot tote

The Madison Tote is beautifully styled and well constructed. I was especially impressed by the egg-crate padded laptop compartment. However, this bag is FREAKISHLY large. It's about twice the size of a normal tote...the effect is akin to those oversized joke sunglasses you see people wearing at football games. I had bruises on my shoulder after carrying it for just one day! At that point I sent it back. I then went to Target and bought a Michael Graves laptop tote for $29.99 that isn't as fancy, but is much more proportionate, is nice enough for work, and adequately protects my tablet PC.

Great looking but doesn't fit larger laptops

I don't agree that this bag is way too big, because it's made to be a laptop bag and not a handbag so it should be bigger. I think this bag is beautiful. However, it is NOT 18" wide at the top, and to fit a large laptop that's kind of important. It is 18 inches at the bottom so technically the description is accurate. But the bag has a slight A-line to it that isn't easy to spot in the pictures here.If you have a laptop that's smaller than 17 inches, this will work, otherwise save your time and money.

Very spacious, but

I like the bag a lot. Would buy again; and I bought mainly because of the size and color. But now that I have used it for 2 weeks, I would re-think the color. Not because I don't like it, but because it picks up dirt from simple touches to other things very easily. Feel like I am constanly cleaning or having to be very careful what it touches.

You've gotta hold it to believe it

I've had a chance to play around with this for a few days now, and while I am a huge fan of the iPod Nano, it will not be replacing my 20GB iPod Photo anytime soon. It's Apple's own fault, really; they gave me 20GB (or 40, or 60) of space first, and now they want to take 90% of it away? Don't think so. I've come to believe what Apple's been telling me for a few years now: I NEED to take my entire music collection around with me everywhere I go. It's as essential as my cell phone and Metro Card. So for the storage reason alone, I can't chuck my 20GB model just yet. But the Nano really is a cool machine, and I imagine it will overtake the higher capacity iPods in popularity shortly because of its size, price, and cool factor.Here's what I consider the improvements to be:1. First and foremost, the transition to flash memory. This enables the Nano to be smaller and operate quieter than iPods that are hard drive-based. Make no mistake, flash memory is the future of digital music players;2. The size, duh. Apple has made the Nano smaller without compromising much of the bright colorful screen. As we all now by now, it is thinner than a number two pencil (my 20GB iPod Photo, on the other hand, is probably three pencils thick). But it's still too large and delicate to jog with, without an optional accessory or two (arm band, lanyard headphones); and3. The Apple-brand accessories that have been released concurrently with the Nano are affordable and well-designed....And what's not-so-great:1. The price drop isn't that substantial, especially for what you get. For an extra $100, you can upgrade to a Photo that has ten times the capacity; and2. The headphone jack is on the bottom of the Nano. I'm not sure what the logic behind this is-it seems like making a change for the sake of making a change to me.Some wonderful things about the color iPods in general: they're very easy to use; their demure size could hardly be improved upon; the color screen is beyond adequate for viewing photos and album art; the battery life is exceptional; making playlists and controlling iTunes are simple tasks; all are compatible with Mac or Windows; and if you use a Mac, you can sync your iPod with your address book, to do list, and calendar (this has come in handy for me a number of times when I'm traveling). Also, if you're a college student or an educator at any level, the Apple Store (both the b&m and online versions) gives discounts on just about everything. For iPods it's about $20, but for computers it's up to $300The bottom line on the Nano: it's a great entry-level MP3 player that will probably suffice for most listeners. However, if you're a music warrior who listens for many hours a day, many days a week, then 2-4GB is just too small to suit you--but of course you've had an iPod for three years now, and you already knew that.

Fragile... yet beautiful! A review by a non-iPodder

Let me start by saying that I'm coming to the iPod Nano from the world of flash MP3 players, this is my first iPod because I was waiting for Apple to make a decent flash MP3... and they've finally done it! So here are the things I love about my iPod Nano after about a month of use:1) Making playlists on iTunes, this is a wonderful feature that you just don't find outside the iPod world!2) Beauty, the iPod Nano is without doubt the sexiest MP3 player alive today. Apple really knows how to make beautiful products.3) Sound is great.4) Love that click wheel thing, another great idea by Apple.5) Beautiful big color display makes navigation easy and fun.I know much of that is old hat to the iPod world, but for me coming from a world of Muvo's and iAudio these are wonderful features. Now for the bad news, why I didn't give the Nano a 5:1) Fragile!! Doesn't Apple understand that part of the appeal of a flash player is ruggedness? I'm scared to take this thing outside or even put it in my pocket without protection.. I immediately went out and spent another $30 for a decent case which leads to2) Where are the accessories? My iAudio's and Muvos came with cases and lanyards and armbands. iPod Nano: nothing!! The most expensive player I've bought to date and the one most in need of a protective case and I have to go and spend an extra $30 for what should have been included!In summary, this is a wonderful product and a delight to use and behold. However, Apple does need to get a clue about durability and accessories imho!

A word of caution to PC users

I bought a 2nd Generation 8 GB Nano to supplement (and probably eventually replace) my 20GB Color iPod, which has been developing signs of old age, getting stuck at innopportune moments. I decided that 8 gig is really big enough to listen to the music I actually listen to every day at the gym, and I wanted to replace my disk-based iPod with a solid state device.My first reaction upon opening the box was astonishment at how small the Nano is! I had never seen one before. It is very slick.Itunes is pretty smart about letting me update the 8 GB Nano from the music library I had accumulated for my 20 GB iPod. It creates a special playlist for the Nano to define what songs are specifically downloaded to the smaller device. I had actually thought I would have to set up a completely new music library, and go through the tedium of reloading all those CDs.One extremely important note of caution for PC users: this is the first USB device I have owned (and I own a lot of different USB devices) that really requires a USB 2.0 port. I didn't even realize that my 3-year-old home-brew Windows machine didn't have USB 2.0; it was never really an issue before. Apple says that USB 2.0 is highly recommended for the 2nd generation Nano, but it really should be a hard requirement. The behavior of my PC while trying to talk to the Nano over a USB 1.1 port was truly bizarre. The Nano basically brought the PC to its knees. I was able eventually to start updating the Nano but after 24 hours had only loaded about 400 songs. The response time of my PC during this ordeal was utterly ridiculous. During the day I bought a USB 2.0 PCI card, shut down the PC, installed the card, and was able to finish updating the Nano in a matter of minutes.

Best bang for your buck

These speakers probably aren't going to turn any heads, but for the price they are well worth it. Pioneer always delivers the best bang for your buck, and these speakers sound excellent. I was very impressed with them, and if all you want is great sounding audio for a great price, look no further.Most of my audio equipment is Pioneer for these exact reasons, and as until I can afford the best these are by far good enough.Bottom line, uless you're a perfectionist audiophile or simply need earth-shattering audio, get these speakers.

Plain review in plain terms with sample shots

The short version:Pros:The optical quality is great, the speed is terrific, and it compares well to the 70-200mm lens that people like to say blows this out of the water (I believe they are wrong - but we will get into that later) and finally, the price cannot be beaten. Buy it.Cons:No hood, extends as it zooms, and the quality of the picture in low light situation lessens a little.The long version:I am writing this in simple terms. I found several, several reviews on this lens but they were all in technical terms and leaves you scratching your head a little. So, if you are like me maybe this review will help you.I bought this lens a couple months ago from US1Photo.com (check these guys out. They regularly have significant sales and terrific customer service). I use this lens with a Canon 40D.I take several types and styles of pictures so I needed a lens that would do the best job at several things and have a very affordable price (right at or less than $1,000). I looked through new, used, third party (Tamron, Sigma, etc) lenses, and read too many reviews and looked at too many images to count, and spent four hours in a photography store playing with lenses before I decided to spend money and take advantage of this lens. All in all I spent about a week's worth of time in research and testing before I bought this lens.---Edit:Okay, so amazon won't let me put a link here. This is how you find me.~Go to Flickr~Then type in a "/" then "photos" then "/" and last type in "gman_five0"And that should take you there.---Test of comment #1:~The Canon EF 70-300mm f/4-5.6 IS USM does not track moving objects very well and the farther to the end of the zoom the slower the tracking.(Flickr Gallery page 2)This, I have found, to be completely wrong. I have used the lens at several sporting events and found that it tracks rather nicely. I was able to track every step of a base-runner from first base to second, slide, and recovery after the play without losing ONE shot.To see what I am talking about check out my gallery on Flickr. The older ones are NOT done with this lens or camera and taken, actually, several years ago. I will reference the pictures in question.Safe, Got There By a Mile, Breaking Up That Double Play (please note that as time goes on from the date that this was posted the pictures may have been re-moved). Also, "Safe" was used instead of another shot taken at the same time and angle with a 70-200mm IS lens.To take these shots I used "AI focus" and the "H" settings on my camera for quicker tracking and the H settings for about 6 frames per second.Test of Comment #2:~The 200-300mm range is nice in theory, but a tack-sharp photo from the 70-200mm f/4L at 200mm is going to look better cropped than a 300mm full-frame photo from this lens.Again, I found this to be wrong. Though I have no actual "full sized" picture for this if you comment back with an email address then we can arrange a viewing of one. Otherwise, take my word for it, I own several lenses and this one stacks up well.(Ref Flickr Gallery)The pictures from the Dance Theater and Tashina were all taken at the 200-300mm focus lengths. Again, they are not full sized because of photo pirates, but if you email me we can see about full sized shots.Test of Comment #3:~The IS motor is loudI do not know what these people are talking about, but if you call that loud...On the other hand, I have heard (once), the sound of the IS motor, but if you are not listening for it you will not even notice it.Things I have found about the lens:If you spend some time with the lens will be one of your best friends. It is a great lens especially for people on a budget (like me). To take the best pictures you cannot just twist it on and go to shooting. Take the time to LEARN about the lens (change shutter speeds, ISO settings, aperture, white balances, etc) and it will show you where it shines - just like the L series lenses and the 70-200mm IS.This lens has a solid make and feels like it will last forever. Then again, as you zoom the lens does extend and is plastic. So, watch out if you are doing sports. You may get it knocked off. It did well for me, though. Extending while zooming makes putting a hood on the lens a bit (very little; so little that you cannot tell) awkward and it looks kinda goofy.I like the lens because it is not as bulky as the 70-200mm lens and it is extremely mobile. It is as quick as some other lenses, not as quick as some, and quicker than others. It will give you great quality pictures. It does have its limits, however: in low light situations not being able to take it back a couple stops and get a wider aperture will not give you the same shot as a 70-200mm. Then again, like I said, it doesn't drop to that f/2.8 and does not cost all that money. This has been the single drawback for me about the lens.I use this lens for portraits (Tashina, Samantha), for sports (see gallery), and music (Shawn Pander - See Gallery). So, it's pretty versatile. I have yet to use with it flash, but that is because I simply do not like to use flash. I have yet to use it in a studio setting, but when I do I will amend this review and add a couple of those pictures as well.This lens comes highly recommended from me. I am not a big time, highly paid, or well known photographer. I just like to shoot and like what I shoot to be of the best quality that I can have AND afford at the time. So, if you are like me and cannot spend the needed $1,500 - $1,700 on a 70-200mm IS lens then spend your money on this lens. You will not be sorry for it.---On another note, comments are welcome. This is my first ever review on here so let me know if there anything else that you would like to know about and I will do my best to answer the question in the most plain terms as possible.

Quite happy with the lens

After debating between this and the 70-200 L series I decided to purchase this lens. I have been pleasantly surprised by the results. I also own the 17-85 and the 50mm 1.8 lenses and I have found that I have gotten the "most pleasing" results from this lens. The pictures have been very sharp from my 20D - even in the 200mm - 300mm range. I've also been happy with the quality of the bokeh.The primary drawback I see is that the AF tends to hunt a fair amount when confronted with low contrast images. That being said, I used it for some flying bird shooting at the wildlife refuge and was surprised to see how many of the shots were in sharp focus. However, it was a little bit of all or nothing. Several shots were also wildly out of focus. Since the lens is fairly slow to focus, you never know what you're gonna get with such a fast moving object against the distant sky.I had much more consistent results when shooting soccer, softball and football in the park. The AF speed did not present an issue for any of these activities and the results were excellent.I wish the lens were a little less expensive but I the prints I have gotten from my 13 X 19 printer have been worth the extra money.

Impressive lens

I bought this lens as a replacement for the earlier 75-300mm IS lens. I was generally happy with that lens, but it had definite limitations - I needed to shoot at f8 or f11 and bump up the ISO to get a decent shutter speed.This new version seems sharp at full zoom even wide open, allowing me to use a lower ISO setting. Size is similar to older version, but the IS seems more effective - looking through the lens when it kicks in you can actually see the image become more stable and less shaky. I got this over the Canon 70-200 f4 L because of the extra reach, smaller size (slightly) and the images I've seen from both are very similar.UPDATE: There have been reports of soft images when using this lens in a verticle orientation - however I have not experienced this on my copy. I'm happy to say that after months of using this lens, I still consider it great.

I did alot of online shopping, reviewing, studied alot of info. and I made the Correct choice. The Optoma H-31 is the projector to buy. Everything that I read online and dug out about this projector is accurate. IT SHINES excellent. DVD with componet cables off a new Panosonic ES10 is breath taking. Skin tones are spectacular REAL Film could not be better. I see things in old videos that I never saw before.For example, Like test your eyes on your own stuff that you have now Tv dvd or tape.See if in the pool scene in Caddy Shack if you can see the Caddy's tan lines. This projector will let you see awesome detail.The Optoma screen puts out enough light to read buy in a darkend room. The resolution is superb.All for less than a plasma or rear projector box occupying floor space. Direct TV with S-video is excellent.GO ahead an try it Amazon has an excellent return policy.

Better than advertised

I was hesitant when I purchased this projector because it was listed as only having 850 lumens for viewing, but this projector has out performed any projector I have ever used for home cinema applications. When I first turned it on an incredibly bright, sharp image projected from approxiamately 18 feet away onto the opposite wall! I have used it in a variety of applications to include: satellite, DVD, and XBOX. I am tickled to death to know that I have spent at least half what my friends have spent for big screen televisions. I can also move it with without the use of a dolly and I can still project the picture over six feet tall! I have never written a review before and have been simply compelled to offer my experience because I value what others have shared in the past. In my opinion, it is well worth the price.

Outstanding value

I did a fair amount of research when I wanted to get a Video Projector for Home Theater as well as hooking up to my Macs (a Powerbook on location for presentations). Read the other reviews here on Amazon because I think by and large, I agree after testing this new unit with those who rated it highly. While the lumen spec seems low, the unit produces bright and clear images out of the box in a darkened room. If you have room darkening blinds or show at night, even on a white wall, the quality is excellent. I am using a DVD player with HDMI output to the Optima using DVI. Don't skimp, use this all digital connection if you can (and get a good cable). The quality of the two films I viewed (2001: A Space Odyssey and The Fifth Element) looked clear and clean with superb colors using the "Cinema" mode right out of the box. I do have a calibration DVD I might mess with but I have to say, I think I might just leave everything alone (if it ain't broke...). I'm pretty critical of color and the Optima does have lots of controls to affect tone and color but I'm not sure I'm going to mess around until I see a lot more output.The unit is very light, comes with a nice carrying case. The remote is backlit which is nice. With the [...], I spent less than [...] and I'm blown away at the quality of the product considering what you used to have to spend on a projector (and still can). While I still love my 56" Samsung DPL projection HDTV, the H31 looks better to me and cost a lot less money. You will not be disappointed with the quality assuming you have good viewing conditions and use DVI.

Major positives and minor negatives

Here are the basics that I considered and have found out from about 9 months of ownership. Keep in mind opinions on photography equipment varies greatly by the user and what the equipment is used for so while I think the 5D is near-perfect, others might not.While the positives and negatives seem even in number, the positives FAR outweigh the negatives. I have no regrets about my purchase.Positives+Full frame sensor: allows me to acheive true wide angle photographs with no crop factor+Image size: I have had a number of large (20"x30") prints made and the results are flawless+Ability to shoot in RAW: While the files are huge (12MB+ each), the information and options this format provides has really expanded my technical and creative abilities.+Build quality: While I haven't tried the true Canon Pro series (1 series), the 5D is pleasantly sturdy and feels solid in my hands. I can see how some might find it too heavy, especially with an L series lens.Negatives--Lens requirements: Because of the full frame sensor, the 5D brings out the best (and worst) out of the corners and edges of your lenses. You will be able to tell a lesser quality lens more easily on the 5D than on a cropped sensor lens. The obvious negative is that better lenses like the L-series are generally much more expensive ($600+)-No flash: Not a big deal to me but I've noticed that people are surprised when they see the 5D has no flash. This doesn't matter that much since built in flashes are rarely useful in most situations.-Dust in sensor: Make sure you get a good sensor cleaning kit shortly after getting the 5D. There are steps you can take to minimize dust like changing lenses rarely and always indoors but you will need to clean the sensor every few months depending on use. To test if you need to clean (on any DSLR), put the camera on a tripod or flat surface, point it at a white wall , focus, and shoot with a long exposure and small aperture (5+ seconds and f/16 or smaller). If there is any junk on your sensor you should see it.

Wonderful Camera for both professional and amateurs alike!

This is one of the greatest things ever in my opinion for both professional, and amateur photographer. Af least, it was for year 2006.And I am very happy to tell everyone that many of my current works for magazine are actually using this wonderful camera.There are several distinct advantage using this camera in the professional environment.1. They are affordable full size sensor camera. Output quality will meets most of requirement given by the client.2. Battery is interchangeable with 20/30D, so it is ideal candidate for 2 camera configuration with 20D/30D.3. As far as Portrait photography are concern, it is currently one of the best in image quality and compared to the 1DS's older design sensor, when situation is ideal, it sometimes create superior result.4. Very low ISO noise, it is really useful for anyone who frequently shoot for low available light situation. ISO800 was useable even for the magazine purpose.5. Relatively lower shutter noise compared to the 20/30D that are helpful for some of noise sensitive shoot.6. Availability of third party add on are actually important to me when I looked for camera. 5D is very good with availability and compatibility or such 3rd party equipment. And I am very happy to use many of 3rd party products with 5D.1DS, due to the its form, has major difficulty with some of affordable 3rd party tool, most notably bellows system.7. Weight is considerably less compared to the 1DS series and it is still full sensor size camera.8. DOF of full size sensor camera thus great Bokeh can be archived if used with great lens.9. Ability to shoot AdobeRGB color space RAW format10. Fairly easy to find additional equipment at the local camera store, when you are on the road (I thinkthat is very important)There are some disadvantage for this camera1. It is 12.8M pixel despite the fact it is full sensor (or Leica format) size and it is 4M pixel smaller than 1DS MKII. And there are few occasion, it will not be enough for the given assignment(You really need to consider type of work you do)2. It does have lower burst rate compared to 1D MKII or 20/30D that is not exactly ideal for the performance art, sports events, or outdoor bird photography.Due to that fact, I normally bring my 20D with me, so if I need decent burst rate, I will rely upon my 20D instead.3.It is not weather sealed, thus, you really cannot take it out when weather is not exactly ideal without shortening camera's life. So, it is not ideal camera for field photographer who shoot at challenging environment.4. It is still expensive for the amateur and, it is still expensive for the professional photographer with rather low fee structure.5. 9 point sensor is more than enough for the most of people. It is however, not for the some of professional who requires quick focus and shoot. It is bit frustrating to work with its AF, if you are used to with 45 point sensor of 1D/1DS series.

Should be 4 and half stars

The 5D is worth it, and then some. I'd buy it again in a heartbeat. Visually it performs better than anything else I've seen. I'm VERY attached to 35mm and this camera either matches film (beautiful tones; sumptuous shadow detail) or outperforms film by a margin (flexibility, detail, the utter lack of noise at high ISO settings).I completely disagree with the assertion elsewhere that vignetting is inevitable. I shoot wide open almost all the time because I dislike flash. You'll find me indoors in the dark Seattle winter with the aperture wide and the ISO cranked to 800. The low noise/high resolution sensor is perfect for this. It out performs my 30D by a huge margin under such conditions.Build quality? There's probably a grain of truth there. I hear the Nikons are better sealed, but the 5D feels neither cheap nor shoddy.I use both the cheapy 50mm/f1.8 and the expensive 24-70 f2.8L series. They only time I've seen any vignetting is when shooting - CORRECTION - when shooting with a too cheap Hoya Polarizer attached. [ORIGINAL TEXT - when shooting at 24mm under bright sunlight; f4.0 to f8; I see some light roll-off in the corners as noted by M.Ryley, but none of the softness that he mentions]This phenomenon is simply not there at all with longer focal lengths.As for speed - maybe I have faster CF cards since I bought them recently, but this hasn't been an issue for me at all. However, I do prefer to use my faster 30D for sporting events where speed is of the essence.I'm a semi-pro; I've been taking picture for over 20 years. I asked 5 full time professionals and a few gifted amateurs to recommend a camera before I made this purchase. Every one of them recommended the 5D - citing image quality. It gives probably three-quarters of the performance of the 1D at only one third of the price.I recommend this camera.

Wonderful teaching tool!

This is a wonderful tool for teaching kids of all ages all about geography and the world. The number of manipulatives provide opportunities to engage an entire class by allowing all students to get mulitiple things to place on the map. It's colorful and large enough to be seen cearly from anywhere in the classroom. I am so glad that I purchased this product. Also, the material of the map makes it easy to stick anything that has a felt back to it. So, you can easily make more manipulatives for it too! I added trade routes and ocea currents to make it even more applicable for my eigth grade honors students! They LOVE map activities now!

Great purchase

First, the people at BT are amazing (I bought directly from them. This info may be useful since these are sold by BT, not Amazon). They gave me generous guidance over the phone as to which shears to buy, which came w/in 2 days. The finger rings were missing. When I called, the man instantly took my word that the rings should have been included and put them in the next mail. Honestly, I have only tested the shears and they are excellent. But I don't know how they will hold up. They seem very well made.

Pleasantly Surprised!! Wow...

Wow. Let me just say that this product exceeded my expectations. Right out of the box, it took me about 3 minutes to get everything plugged in and the software installed. I was watching TV on my Mac literally 5 minutes after it arrived at my door. The unit comes with a free subscription to the online TitanTV program guide. The TitanTV is half the reason I'm so excited about this product. It is freakishly easy to use and you can literally set it to record a program with one click. -ONE CLICK!!! The TitanTV service somehow syncs itself up with the EyeTV program and everything is very seamless, elegant, and EXTREMELY easy to use. I was completely blown away by how easy everything is. I was ready to sit down and take a while to read manuals, etc. and try to figure this sucker out, but there's really nothing to it!The picture quality also surprised me. I am running it on a new iMac G5 (17", 1.8ghz, 1GB RAM, 64MB Graphics), and everything LOOKS GREAT! (even at full screen) I haven't recorded anything yet, but it does record at a lower resolution, so recorded shows will probably look slightly less stunning at full screen, but I have high hopes.Overall, I am extremely pleased. And would recommend it to anyone who is already interested enough to read this review. BUY IT! You WILL NOT be disappointed! Do keep in mind, however, that results will vary depending on the machine you are running it on. My iMac does the job fine, but a G4 Mac might struggle a bit...[EDIT] - I now use it on my PowerBook G4, no difference in picture - still GREAT![EDIT] - Recording looks great!

Clarity depends on your signal

I've had my EyeTv 200 for a couple of weeks now, and I've found that the clarity of the on-screen image is dependant upon your signal. I only have the regular TV stations that come in through an amplified TV antenna. The stations with a good signal are clear on the computer screen while those with weak signals are not so clear. Also, if you have problems with the TV signal for your regular TV then that problem may be amplified and look even worse with the EyeTv. Cable and satellite customers shouldn't have any problems with image quality or set up.Set up is straight forward - no problems there, or with the software to make it work when you want. I had no problems getting it to work the first time through.The EyeTv box itself does seem to get a little warm when left on, which is easy to do because the Fire-wire cable provides power to it. So, I don't set anything on top of it and give it a little extra space under my desk on a small shelf. Overall, a little better then I expected.

Better Than I Thought (revised review)

Well, now I can tell you something about computer TV recorders for the Mac, from actual experience. I have more experience, in fact, than I would like to have had.First I got the myTV.PVR by Hauppauge, cheap (roughly $120). It ran, showing TV on my screen, and allowing channel selection for all our cable channels. It had a timer to catch programs, and I recorded a number of movies and a couple of Monk episodes. The movies had to be converted using a free online program in order to be recordable by Toast, and the synchronization between audio and video was imperfect. Then the unit began acting up: refusing to work, and seemingly messing up the hard drives. I talked to the company, and they admitted that they had received reports of a problem with overheating. Thereupon I ran the device with its case removed and a fan blowing on it, and it worked. I then replaced the case and attached an old computer fan for cooling, and it continued to work. Then, about a week ago, it died: it would not even turn on, and its indicator light would not glow. Kaput, dead, deceased.So I ordered an EyeTV 200 (by Elgato) through Amazon.com for more than twice the cost of the first device, but still cheaper than at the Apple store, which did not have any available, anyway. It came today. It showed a much better picture, and could pick up TV schedules from the Internet. It uses FireWire to connect to the computer, which is a good idea. It also is designed to record according to a schedule you program; it also is said to convert VHS to digital. It appeared to be a much better device than the myTV.PVR.I was about to recommend the EyeTV 200 with enthusiam, but then. ... it abruptly stopped receiving any channels. It would not even play VHS fed to it through the composite video port. It would play back video clips from the computer, though; so apparently its tuner and analog input system are dead.I had the unit all packaged to return, when finally an email from the Elgato support arrived just in time, with a list of suggested cures for the problem. The one that worked was the old "trash the preferences" therapy. Now the EyeTV is working well, with a few minor software quirks which only add to its interest.It is probably the only viable recording device of its kind for the Mac. The Canopus digitizers may be technically slightly better, but lack the TV tuning capability, and the ability to schedule recordings. So the EyeTV is the one.

Excellent device, but only for its market target

I'm not a professional videographer. Still I might well be the pickiest man in the world when it comes to video quality. I'm the one who keeps noticing MPEG artifacts in TV transmissions all the time, because I've been doing my own DVDs for 5 years. In short, I can judge video quality at first sight.This said, you'll never see me with a big professional camera over my shoulder, because I don't film for a living in the first place and also because I already had many experiences where I had to leave my camcorder behind because it was too bulky to carry. And I'm not talking about big VHS cams, I'm referring to the "small" Hi-8 cameras from Sony: great image, excellent sound, yet too bulky to carry to many wild adventures or long trekkings.At this point in my life, I came to the conclusion that comfortableness proved to be more important than top-notch quality, especially for a backpacker like me who can't afford to choose between carrying a camcorder or two extra bottles of water. This mini DV camera the size of a digital still camera was worth a try.So this is the reason why I bought the Canon Optura S1 in the first place: the smaller available camcorder in the market in October 2005 ( FBI/CIA gadgets don't count here ;) and manufactured by my favorite still camera brand. So I bought it with all this in mind. As you will see (and I really knew this before purchasing, so I'm not complaining) such small size has its trade-offs limitations, and it's up to you to decide whether it's worth to buy it or not. What follows is my personal opinion on the camera.Pro's* Small as hell, that's my baby!!! Can fit in a still-photo case and attach to the belt.* Colors are *in-cre-di-bly* accurate. Now, this is a tough one when dealing with NTSC!! By far the best color-matching camcorder that I ever owned.* Excellent image quality in daylight, and I mean it.These 3 things said, the camera paid itself and that's enough to make me happy with my purchase. But for the sake of this review, let's move on:Could be improved's:* The device can act as a 2 Megapixel still camera as well, but do not expect "Canon quality" at all (and this has nothing to do with the 2 Mpx limitation). The still shots are maybe acceptable for the occasional user, probably could compete side by side with many generic brand 2 Mpx still cameras, but nowhere near a 2 Mpx Canon point&shot still cam.* There's an included light for night filming. This certainly isn't an halogen lamp, but for something that looks pretty much like a "led", it gives a decent ammount of light, useful to illuminate faces no farther than 1.5 meters (45 feet) and that's about it.* 10x Zoom: Actually, it's a miracle that such a small device can accommodate as much zoom as 10x. Sure, that's low compared to today's standards, but each of us knows the weight (importance) that assigns to this feature. My Hi-8 Sony TRV-66 has 20x and unless you put it on a tripod it's quite a challenge to obtain a steady frame at the full 20x. For the few occasions that you may be using the full zoom, 10x is fairly enough.Con's* Quality degradation is too noticeable when light gets dimmer. I'm not speaking about a dark room illuminated by a birthday candle, I'm referring to an average room at night illuminated by regular bulbs: The picture won't necessarily be dark, but the noise (video noise, for those who dominate the matter) is more noticeable than I would like.* The "wide" angle is too narrow. Again, a consequence of the small size and lens diameter. To capture an entire scenario in the frame I would have to walk a couple of meters back that otherwise wouldn't be necessary with other camcorders.* And this last one is really unforgivable: It doesn't include an option to stamp date/time in the frame during recording time. So you either do this during edition time in your PC (most people don't edit their videos BTW) or you have to keep saying e.g. "today is November 29th..." if you want your videos to keep some historical reference 10 years from now.Well, I tried to be fair enough in my review. As I said, I'm very happy with this purchase because it exceeded what I expected in some aspects, but I also added the not-so-good things for you to judge objectively if this is the right camera for you.Happy filming!

A bit dissapointed

I don't usually purchase things sight unseen, but this camera was an exception. I had only my past experiences with Canon to go by, which I had been satisfied with.I wanted something compact, so the size is perfect for me. I like the widescreen mode. And the camera is fairly intuitive, although I've had to reference the manual on a couple occasions.The boxey shape reminded me of an elph still camera I purchased sometime back, so I naturally assumed it was encased in metal as well. Nope. Cheap plastic feel that I'm concerned I'll end up breaking.But my biggest gripe is the video quality when shot indoors. Even with the light on the picture is really grainy. I'm going to put it up against my old Sony Video8 camera as a test, but I swear the old camera took a brighter picture.We purchased this to take shots of our new baby girl. I've been really dissapointed with the indoor shooting since that's where new parents spend a great deal of time.

There is very little not to like about this videocamera...

This camera produces excellent image quality for the price, it's very compact, and ergonomic. It's packed with features. If you are a mainstream user, it is more than adequate. There are those who will compare it to $1000-$2000 videocams and it will naturally fall short. But the fact is, it's reasonably priced, has sufficient features for most users, and can be taken anywhere because of its size. I would recommend getting an extra battery since you will only get 45 minutes - 1 hour energy if you use the LCD display and do a lot of zooming, etc. Speaking of zoom, some people think that a 10x optical zoom is less than ideal, but face it -- if you are trying to zoom much beyond that level, you are going to need a tripod. Overall, this is an excellent item, and delivers the quality I would expect from Canon.
