Manfrotto 468MG Hydrostatic Ball Head Product Description:

  • Accurate degree markings on rotation axes allow for precise positioning of the camera.
  • A repositionable ratchet means that the locking lever's action will never be blocked either open or closed by interference with the camera body, tripod shoulder, etc.
  • Sturdy all- metal construction.
  • The double 90Degree groove (one on each side of the head) means switching from landscape to portrait is convenient however you're set up.
  • Hydrostat ball locking system based on a chamber containing fluid, which, when pressurized by the tightening of the lock knob, exerts an even locking force on the ball for easy secure locking.

5This ballhead rocks. Very solid, zero
By Wing Wong
Bought this ballhead to use on my monopod, and it has been extremely helpful in composing shots and getting proper framing when bracing the monopod against something.I've found that with a 70-200/2.8 lens, the friction dial(smaller one) really doesn't do much, as even max friction won't stop the 70-200/2.8+body combo from moving. But perhaps I'm pushing really hard or have it on a severe tilt. The large dial locks in tight very quickly and might take a bit of force to unstick it. :) At least, on my copy. The ball movement is a bit gritty/less smooth, as some others have commented.Major gripe: The low profile quick release base/RC2 mount does not fit, because the round protrusion for the quick release lever will touch the wide based ballhead top. GAH! Ended up using a 1/4 to 3/8 + flange adapter to make it work, but less than ideal. :(

5Great Head!

I have a D300 and a heavy 400mm lens atop a Gitzo tripod. This thing handles it with ease... Really smooth and precise controls. It's pricey but worth it.

3Good, but there are better...
By Steve Denton
It's a reasonable head, however if you are using a long lens, you really need a gimbal head like the Wimberley. However my real issue with it is, with the head loosened you compose your shot, but when you then lock it down, it moves, so you have to start over, and learn to adjust to the movement.
