By Bob Horton
I purchased this product after considering several others. I did not compare prices so I can't comment on dollar value against other products, but the Deckmaster system appeared to be the only choice that did not require some sort of cutting into the deck (read: biscuit cuts.) I was able to install the strips using only a cordless drill. The installation went well and I did not encounter any problems, although I learned a bit along the way.The instructions say to alternate the strips on either side of the joists. As I was running a diagonal pattern (45 deg to the joists), I ran into several places where the staggered strips ended up missing one side or the other of a deck board. I should have overlapped the strips by about 2 inches in places and not at all in others. The deck screws will pull the decking laterally a bit. I imagine this is why the strips should alternate sides so as not to pull the joist to one side. This may only affect decking run at an angle to the joists, but with practice, I was able to adjust the gaps between decking boards a bit by the angle I ran in the screws.Care should be taken to snug the strips down to the joists. Once the deck is screwed down, it is too late. Also, if a deck board is warped and needs pulling down, run in a joist screw in the hole directly below where you will run in the deck screw. Otherwise the strip will deform and pull upwards, leaving the deck board raised somewhat. These are not criticisms, only observations which may help you with your install. The only criticism I have to offer is that quite a few of the powdercoated screws have so much finish on them I could not seat the screw on the driver bit. That's a small price to pay for what I have now: a deck that looks comparable to a hardwood floor and a wife who is thrilled.
