By L. Angelo
I do a lot of bathroom and kitchen remodels, and many times, that calls for tile work. Several years ago, I needed something better than a saw to cut 1/2" Hardibacker board, because of all the cement dust they kick up. I bought one of these directly from Pacific Tool when the local lumber/hardware supplier only carried the S404 Snapper Shear. Loved it from the first time I used it, and it went through a lot of remodels before the motor burned out a couple of months ago. I called Pacific Tool directly, and they confirmed my suspicions about the motor, and they were able to 2nd day a new one to me.This tool cuts backer board like a hot knife through butter, going through five feet of 1/2" Hardiboard in less than a 30 seconds. It does accurate inside corners, and with a little practice and finesse, you can do trim cuts quickly, and neatly, such as when the cut board is just a bit on the tight side.

I'm a bathroom remodeling contractor and install only Hardibacker. I used to use a rotozip and right angle grinder with a diamond blade to do more intricate cuts in hardibacker. The score and snap method only works when you're cutting off a big enough piece.I finally decided to lay out the dough and buy this for a large bathroom remodel and I can't believe I waited so long to buy it. This thing cuts hardibacker so easy. What's really nice about it is that if you're trimming off a small section, after you cut the hardi, you still have a usable piece left. You don't destroy hardi by the score and snap method on small pieces. In addition to cutting my installation time in half, it also saves me money by leaving me perfect leftovers. And all this without a load of dust. One reviewer mentioned that the cord may get caught in the kerf. It happened to me a few times but if you're careful, it's not a problem. The only thing is that if you're doing a long cut, the curled up hardi debris kinda blocks the view of your cutting line. So you have to stop cutting and push the curled up debris out of the way. But that's not the fault of this cutter really.I'd give this more stars if I could!

If you've ever cut HardiBacker with any other method, you will appreciate the speed and accuracy that this tool provides--not to mention the virtually dust-free operation. This shear allows you to make cuts as fast as a circular saw in 1/4" and 1/2" backer board but without the mess. You can also use it to trim even 1/8" of material off a piece that is too large, making it ideal for custom fitting irregular shapes. The only criticism I can levy is that I wish the cutting head was 90 degrees to the board--as it is on their cordless model. As it is, the power cord has a tendency to get caught in the kerf of the cut. The flatter you hold the tool to the blades, the cleaner the cut; unfortunately, doing this tends to press the power cord against the board and drag the cord into the kerf. Small nit, but fixing this would make an otherwise excellent tool perfect.
