By Joseph Bergey
I bought the set of 12 carving tools from two cherries after hours of researching online. I was totally inexperienced going in to the purchase as a new wood carver but I knew I had to be using quality tools if I were going to be serious about it.After a while; I narrowed my choices...it was between a set of swiss made chisels by Pfeil and the Two Cherries set... to be honest, after now having the Two Cherries set for a couple years I regret not buying the Pfeil set. I didn't know it at the time, but now I know what to look for when buying carving tools. My set of Two Cherries tools had a few subtle defects (or not so subtle to a more knowledgeable carver). The V-tool was not ground flat at the cutting edge...as a matter of fact, the edge was wavy. The bevel on a couple other tools seemed to be offset and not ground square. The tools were polished to a mirror finish with a sharp edge ready for use which worked well for a beginner but now that I am more experienced I would not have accepted the tools as they came.I mentioned the Pfeil tools because after doing many more hours of research online and from talking to other carvers the Pfeil carving tools seem to be what most carvers prefer...I've watched many videos of carvers using the Pfeil tools and they appear to hold a great edge, they're made of great quality steel, and everyone says how they are a joy to use. I own one currently and plan to buy more.I wouldn't give up on two cherries though; I think I just may have gotten a less than great set which seemed to have made it around the QA process...many people rave about the quality of two cherries as well, and what ultimately led me to my decision to buy these was because I thought the Pfeil brand was more of a "big box" brand after having seen it around much more than the two cherries tools so I didn't want to follow the crowd - I thought going with the two cherries was the more elite, qualitative choice but based solely on the set I have, I was wrong.

I have used the same Two Cherries carving tool set since 1984 and I am very happy with them. With the exception of the V Parting tool. Mine has the exact same defect that the other reviewer listed. Over the years I have added to my assortment of carving tools with other brands, namely Henry Taylor which are very fine tools and Pfeil which are absolutely superb. I've been very happy with Two Cherries and I am proud to have them on my bench. I can say the same of my Henry Taylor tools(the professional line not the Acorn line), but when I need to add a new gouge or chisel to my lineup, it's a Pfeil.
