By J. McHenry
My pedal has the smile logo, so it doesn't match the picture. Also, it didn't work at first! I found that the base plate, when screwed back on, was touching a bit of metal on the "in" plug, and thus shorting out, I guess - by loosening the nut and turning the plug a quarter turn I solved the problem. I suspect they test them without putting the back on, so don't return it just for this problem. Look for the offending spot by simply touching the interior guts of the pedal with a guitar plugged into an amp, and with the battery in. When my touch elicited a buzz, I found the problem. It sounds fuller (and less noisy) than a Boss DS-1, but gets darker when the fuzz is turned down. Not a hugely adjustable sound, but if Hendrix and Eric Johnson used one... also, they are giant-sized, so consider yourself warned. Complex chords sound like sludge at full fuzz settings too. It's a fuzz pedal, after all. And, it only takes a nine volt battery, and the back plate is clunky to re-screw on. Plus, my no-slip thingy was unsticking itself, like another person mentioned. Not perfect, but simple and tough, so it's a trade-off. I consider the full on fuzz sound hard to recreate, so I like it.

By David T McKenna
Silicone or Germanium? I think both are valid choices so you are not going to hear me say one is "better." That said, when I learned that the Fuzz Face was being re-released with a germanium transistor I HAD TO HAVE ONE. Fresh out of the box, I was a bit disappointed to find that the foot guard did not stick to the center of the unit. I'd push it down and it would stay for about five minutes before popping back up again. Admittedly this is a small issue but you would think that for the money, it would have a decent adhesive. I do however really like the rubberized knobs as I find myself often tweaking them with my feet as I play, so that was a superior choice over hard plastic. Now for sake of understanding where I am coming from sonically, let me say that I play only single-coil guitars through this pedal (Strat, Tele, & Jaguar). With that in mind, if I have both the "volume" and "fuzz" knobs on the pedal at max, and the volume on my guitar at full, you really cannot tell the difference between the neck and bridge pickups at all. It is one big sonic mush. But I found that by turning the guitar volume knob down to 5, I get plenty of delicious distortion with a tangy high-end bite. If I want to go to a fuller sound I may go up as high as 8 which sounds like a wild animal trying to rip through my amplifier. All this is a byproduct of the slew rate on this pedal, which is fast and furious, but I can dial in what I want very easily. Beyond 8, the low end just starts to get out of control so I just don't go there anymore. Once I figured out that bit, I REALLY started to like this pedal. It sounds exactly like what I want a germanium transistor to sound like: Full, Deep and MEAN.

By tango
The Fuzz Face is a very good sounding replica of a classic fuzz pedal. It is not very versatile, but offers a very accurate fuzz tone. This Fuzz Face has a Germanium PNP transistor instead of a silicone one. The Germanium is a little fuzzier and dirtier sounding. If you want the silicone transistor you should look into the Jimi Hendrix Fuzz Face, which is also manufactured by Dunlop.
